You can still have a useful conversation. Explain what you know, acknowledge what is unresolved and agree when you will return with an update. Ask how the uncertainty is affecting the person’s work. Avoid filling gaps with reassurance you cannot support. A clear account of what is known and unknown gives people something more useful than speculation.
